He’s the Mad Titan. He wrecks planets. He wants to destroy half the universe. He swats away superheroes like they’re flies on his dessert. He could very possibly end the lives of some of, if not all of, the Avengers.
His name, as the Avengers: Infinity War marketing blitz has already seared into your brain, is Thanos.
For 10 years, Marvel Studios has been pumping out superhero movies — 18 successful ones, to be exact. In that span of movies, we’ve seen the beginning of Iron Man and Captain America, the end of Ultron, Thor’s redemption, Ant-Man’s offbeat adventures, new additions like Scarlet Witch and Black Panther, and the weird birth of Vision.
But it’s Thanos, this ultimate, world-destroying villain, who marks the occasion that is Infinity War. The biggest, baddest Marvel villain of the past decade is the core of the biggest, baddest Marvel movie ever made.
Yet for all the hype, we actually haven’t been told very much about Thanos beyond his penchant for universe destruction. He’s amassed a whopping four minutes of actual screen time in those 18 movies, and the last we actually saw of him was in a post-credits scene in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
A villain this mysterious is necessarily going to raise some questions.
Why is he coming to Earth? Is purple his real color? What’s he like in the comic books? Does he have friends? What does he like to do for fun? And most importantly, what makes him different, and more important, than all the other villains the Avengers have faced together and apart?
Since Marvel hasn’t screened the movie yet, we don’t have all the answers. What we do have is what Marvel has shown us so far of its cinematic universe, and the comic book source material the film is loosely based on. Here, then, is a brief guide to what to expect from Thanos in Infinity War.
To fully understand Thanos, you have to understand the Infinity Stones. The Marvel cinematic universe has focused more on what Thanos wants than his own backstory, resulting in a characterization defined in large part by his desire to possess the stones.
In the mythology of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Infinity Stones are six “ingots” of immense power. We learn this in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, when the Collector explains to the Guardians (and the audience) why they’re such a big deal. He says:
Oh, my new friends, before creation itself, there were six singularities, then the universe exploded into existence and the remnants of this system were forged into concentrated ingots .. Infinity Stones.
The Collector goes on to say that the gems are so powerful, the people who hold them eventually blow up and die. We find out later in the film that beings have to be superpowered just to handle them.
2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron provided some important new intel by way of direct references to the stones and Thor’s visit to a magical, dream-inducing hot spring. Thor’s resulting vision reveals the Infinity Stones (we had previously never seen them together) as well as their locations in two different cosmic objects: the Tesseract (seen in The Avengers, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger) and the Aether (Thor: The Dark World). And in 2016’s Doctor Strange, we learned that the Sorcerer Supreme has an Infinity Stone — the Time stone — as well.
The six Infinity Stones (known as Infinity Gems in the comics) are referred to as Time, Mind, Space, Reality, Soul, and Power. Alone, each one has the ability to enhance its wielder’s powers (for instance, the Mind stone will enhance the telepathic abilities of telepaths). If a being manages to collect and combine them all, you have what’s called the complete Infinity Gauntlet, which will grant you unparalleled omnipotence. So if the wrong person — say, someone like Thanos — gets his or her hands on all six, it’s time to clock out early and make plans for intergalactic travel.
In the comics, the Infinity Stones played a major role in Marvel’s 1991 The Infinity Gauntlet series, by writer Jim Starlin and artist George Pérez. Marvel is borrowing some of Infinity Gauntlet’s ideas for Infinity War, and appears to be combining them with bigger elements from a 2013 comic book crossover arc called Infinity.
In Infinity, Thanos launches an attack on Earth alongside a team called the Black Order (more on them in a bit). In Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos is appointed by Death (an actual character) to assemble the Infinity Gems and cull the universe.
Both iterations depict Thanos as a maniacal, hulking brute. He’s more about force than strategy, more about strangling the life out of his enemies than simply defeating them. He’s determined to do what he sets his mind to (usually bring death and destruction upon wherever he may land). And in those two stories, he’s so laser-focused to see his goal through that it eventually becomes his undoing: In Infinity Gauntlet, he’s too obsessed with impressing Lady Death and himself that he becomes distracted, while in Infinity, he’s defeated because he overlooked his own son and a betrayal within in his ranks.
The thing about Marvel’s movies is that we don’t really know Thanos that well, nor do we know how much of the Thanos we see in these two arcs will translate to Infinity War.
From what little we’ve seen of him, he ‘s physically imposing but has yet to flex his full powers. Psychologically, he seems to be more in line with what we saw in Infinity: a villain who’s calling the shots with a heavy side of cruelty. We learned in Guardians Vol. 2 that he was a sadistic father to his adoptive daughters Nebula (who plays a big role in the Infinity Gauntlet comic event) and Gamora — pitting them against each other and making them battle. And Marvel has told us so many times that he’s the most fearsome villain in the Marvel universe.
But it’s not clear yet if these elements will combine to make Thanos not just the biggest villain in the MCU but also the best villain.
All we know about Thanos is that he’s the biggest, baddest villain and that he wants the Infinity Stones to destroy half of the universe. That Thanos has so far been a character defined solely by these two factors is a little worrisome considering Marvel has a cinematic history of villains who have wanted to do essentially the same thing, give or take an Infinity Stone or two.
Loki and the Red Skull had their own plans for Earth in The Avengers and Captain America: The First Avenger. Ultron wanted to destroy it in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ronan the Accuser wanted to do the same, but to a different planet, in Guardians of the Galaxy. Ego, the Living Planet, wanted to take over the universe in the Guardians sequel, as did Hela, goddess of death, in Thor: Ragnarok.
Marvel villain after Marvel villain was defeated in part because Marvel was making way for Thanos — a villain that the films have been promising since The Avengers has the capability, unlike those who came before him, to tear apart the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Thanos doesn’t live up to the hype, the disappointment won’t just be Thanos but also all the villains Marvel disposed of in prepping us for the Mad Titan himself.
One of the ways Thanos promises to be different is that there’s a distinct possibility that he’ll kill an Avenger or two. None of Marvel’s main superheroes have died facing a villain, and Thanos killing one (or three) would bolster the claim that he’s bigger and more deadly than Hela or Red Skull or Ultron. But beyond that, from a storytelling standpoint, Marvel needs to find a way to make Thanos a villain with a story, to give him a motivation beyond destroying the universe simply because that’s what he does. The biggest, baddest villain in the MCU needs a distinct voice — something that’s unfortunately lacking in Marvel’s previous movie villains.
After all, Thanos is what the past 10 years of Marvel moviemaking has been building up to; he’s got a lot to prove. But he’s not going to do it alone. He’s got an army to help him take down the Avengers and a cadre of fearsome generals to do his bidding.
In the official trailer for Infinity War, there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot with major implications for the movie. Loki is pictured surrounded by four individuals who aren’t Thanos:
From the left, that’s Proxima Midnight (the woman holding a spear), Ebony Maw (the skinny guy), Corvus (who’s holding a weapon), and the Black Dwarf (the giant). These four characters appear in the aforementioned Infinity comic book arc and essentially function as Thanos’s four generals. (In the comic books, there’s a fifth member of the Black Order who is named Supergiant, but it’s unclear if she’s in the movie.)
Each one has his or her own special powers and skills, which should make for some flashy fights with the Avengers. Proxima and Corvus are your hand-to-hand combat gurus. The Black Dwarf is the muscle. Ebony Maw is the manipulative and maybe magical trickster.
I’m expecting to see Proxima and Corvus take on Cap and Black Panther, while the Black Dwarf looks to be physically on par with the Avengers’ heavy hitters like Thor.
But what’s really exciting is that these characters also come with their own motivations that will hopefully make their way into the film, helping to flesh out not only them as individual baddies but also the alpha villain they serve.
In the comic books, some of them want to please Thanos, while others are looking to use this opportunity to move up in the world. For example, at the end of Infinity, Ebony Maw uses Thanos’s long-lost son against him. Barring a drastic plot twist, the introduction of Thanos’s son doesn’t seem like a possibility in Infinity War, but keeping Ebony Maw’s personality and mentality is definitely doable.
These mid-major villains could shake up what’s become the standard Marvel villain protocol. They may not necessarily be looking to take over the universe or destroy Earth — and that’s a good thing, because there have been so many of those already. There’s an opportunity here to give each one a distinct personality and then showcase how that interacts with a boss like Thanos. Perhaps a couple might even double-cross him.
Of course, this excitement still exists primarily as speculation. There’s no golden rule that Marvel has to abide by its comic book source material. The Black Order could end up fizzling out or not living up to their comic book counterparts. Either way, we’ll get answers to these questions, and to see if Marvel cashes in on its big villain moment, when Infinity War hits theaters on April 27.
Avengers: Infinity War could be one of the most expensive films ever made, a new report suggests.
The superhero film, which ties together plot-lines from 10 years of Marvel blockbusters, has cost an estimated $300 million, the Wall Street Journal reports.
That matches the cost of last year's DC film Justice League and 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End – previously the second-most-expensive films ever made, after 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which had a net budget of $378.5 million.
Justice League earned back more than double its $300 million budget, taking more than $650 million at the worldwide box office despite negative reviews. Infinity War looks set to pull off a similar feat, judging by Marvel's recent successes; 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron made more than $1.6 billion worldwide, on a net budget of $267 million.
Avengers: Infinity War will premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, and opens in UK cinemas from Thursday April 26.
Directed by film-making brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, it features a large ensemble cast – with 16 actors credited in leading roles – including Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch.
“Avengers: Infinity War” hasn’t officially launched at the box office yet, but it’s already expected to be a winner. In fact, the film is currently poised to potentially unseat 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the biggest opening of all time in the U.S. and Canada, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The current opening weekend record is $248 million, Infinity War has already sold more than $50 million in advance tickets, and surveys suggest that more people are interested in seeing the film than were in the last Star Wars release.
Recent surveys suggest 45% of moviegoers consider the film to be a “first choice” when it comes to seeing upcoming films at the box office, in contrast to the 33% of moviegoers who said the same about The Force Awakens at the same point in time before its opening, reports The Journal.
Infinity War was the first film to be shot using IMAX cameras. It follows the release of another hit from Marvel, “Black Panther,” which accounted for one-quarter of all movie tickets sold during the first three months of 2018. Worldwide, it has grossed close to $1.3 billion.
Fandango has released its annual list of the most anticipated films of the summer, and Marvel’s biggest blockbuster yet, Avengers: Infinity War, is the this year’s No. 1 pick.
Whether or not you feel an April release counts as a “summer” film is subjective — last year’s offerings fell between Memorial Day and Labor Day, while the 2018 list conveniently begins on April 27, the date of Infinity War‘s debut. Regardless, more than 4,500 fans voted in the survey to put Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at the top of the list.
The list of most anticipated blockbusters of the summer include a whole lot of sequels: Deadpool 2, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Incredibles 2, Mama Mia: Here We Go Again, Sciario: Day of the Soldado, and Ant-Man and the Wasp are all part of the top 10. Rounding out the list are spin-offs or series continuations like Solo: A Star Wars Story, Ocean’s 8, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
The survey also included categories for the summer’s biggest actors — Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool 2) and Sandra Bullock (Oceans 8) are the fan-favorite actor and actress for 2018’s summer films. Fans also voted for rising stars like Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), as well as Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Solo: A Star Wars Story).
Incredibles 2, Christopher Robin, and Hotel Transylvania 3 topped the Family Film category, while Crazy Rich Asians made the list for both Live-Action Comedy and Summer Sleeper. Fans are also chose The Spy Who Dumped Me and Sorry to Bother You for the Comedy and Sleeper categories, respectively.
The summer season officially begins (apparently!) next week with the release of Infinity War. See the full results from Fandango’s annual survey below:
Most Anticipated 2018 Summer Blockbuster:
- Avengers: Infinity War (April 27)
- Deadpool 2 (May 18)
- Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25)
- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 22)
- Incredibles 2 (June 15)
- Ocean’s 8 (June 8)
- Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (July 20)
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout (July 27)
- Sicario: Day of the Soldado (June 29)
- Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6)
Avengers Infinity War Full Movie in English Subtitles
I remember the first time Thanos was introduced to us. It was in a short that aired after the credits for 2012's Avengers.
I didn't know who he was, but the gasps from the audience said everything: guys, it is so on.
Now, six years and many teasers later, it actually is on. Thanos is the star bad dude in Avengers: Infinity War, which will hit theaters worldwide April 27. It looks to be the most epic, and successful, installment yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Oh, how things can change in six years. In that time, the MCU has expanded exponentially. Which makes the third Avengers movie intimidating.
To pump myself up for Infinity War, I watched the Thanos teasers that have been shown post-credits since The Avengers. I was reminded in one that Nebula, also known as Thanos' adopted daughter, also known as 'the blue chick from Guardians of the Galaxy,' was a villain in the first Guardians movie. This was jarring. Infinity War may as well be called 'every hero ever vs. Thanos.' And she's in it, so I just lumped her in with the good guys.
A quick Wikipedia search for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 explains that Nebula was also a villain in that movie, but eventually reconciles with her sister, Gamora (also known as 'the green chick'), and I guess that makes her a full-fledged hero. But I'm still not completely sure. It was a confusing time.
This is an enduring problem with MCU films for me, especially as they increasingly become ensemble deals. Every time a new one comes out, there are always whispers from the cinema audience (and myself). 'Who is that again? Where is she from? Didn't he die?'
Back in my day, the Avengers were comprised of Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and Captain 'Not a Real Hero' America. (Black Widow and Hawkeye were technically Avengers too, but they didn't have their own feature films so they only half counted.)
OK, I'm kidding. I know who all these people are: Eyepatch Thor. Captain 'Trying to make up for my lack of superpowers with a beard' America. Blonde Black Widow. The Guardians of the Galaxy Gang. Black Panther & Co. Don Cheadle. And so on.
Don't let the cynicism confuse you, I am very excited. I would pay $20 just to watch two hours of Teen Groot. Every time I see one of the hundreds of Infinity War posters plastered around Sydney I think, 'man I can't wait to see that.'
But walking to work this week, I saw a billboard with all of the film's characters sprawled across it. I was overcome with a sense of dread. It was like high school all over again.
'I haven't studied hard enough for this.'
To get the most out of Infinity War, the culmination of 10 years and billions of dollars in Marvel films, it would be best to be up-to-date with all 23 characters on the poster. This seems like an unfair ask.
I've seen every film in the MCU, but with the exception of a few, I've only seen them once, usually upon release. That means I've spent around 36 hours of my life watching Marvel films. That's more time than I spent studying for any high school or college exam, and yet I feel less prepared than ever.
Back in yonder year, when a new Lord of the Rings film would be released, my family and I would watch the preceding film(s) the night before to catch up on the the Fellowship. But Infinity War is the 19th movie in the MCU! Ain't nobody got time for that. Not even Stan Lee got time for that.
I've purposefully avoided using the word 'complicated' here. The MCU isn't confusing or convoluted, there's just a lot of it. The baseline of knowledge is also low. No movie is ruined by your not having memorised each character's history, family tree and dietary requirements. After all, charming superhero takes on new threat in a spectacular showdown is a formula that these days only DC seems capable of wrecking.
I'm not saying the films should be dumbed down for amnesiacs like me. Just that less can be more, and that Marvel's expanded universe would almost certainly be better off with a little contraction.

I saw the first Guardians of the Galaxy three times, and also liked the second one, but I was still hazy on Nebula's character arc. These are the types of details that get lost in the shuffle over the course of a decade and 19 films. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who have every character profile memorised, but I'm also sure there are more people out there who don't.
The first Avengers felt special because it was four heroes (plus two half-Avengers) forming a supergroup. It ended with the first appearance of a new supervillain in Thanos. Six years later, The Avengers are still a supergroup, but the individual parts feel less significant.
On the plus side, now that I've done my research for this column I won't have to wonder too much about Nebula's motivations when she pops onscreen in Infinity War.

Word on the street — and on social media — indicates that not every superhero will survive “Avengers: Infinity War.” When The Post asked screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus who’s going to die, McFeely pretended not to hear the question, and Markus replied dryly, “We are all going to die eventually.”
Here then are our best educated guesses at how much danger some of the key characters face.
Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) Black Panther just got his first solo movie in February, and it's made more than $675 million domestically, recently passing 'Titanic' to become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time at the US box office. He's not going anywhere.
Spider-Man (Tom Holland) The Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony Pictures currently share the rights to Spider-Man. With hundreds of millions at stake, Sony's not going to let its biggest name in the superhero pantheon disappear.
Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn has said a third film is coming in 2020, and it's hard to imagine that happening without the space gang's biggest audience draw.
Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) Johansson is a veteran of the franchise, and she has yet to have her own solo film, although writers have reportedly been hired to craft a script for one. In the wake of #MeToo, it seems unlikely that anyone would want Marvel to kill off the best-known of its very few heroines.
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) The character is one of the most recent additions to the MCU, so he should be sticking around. Still, it's a little suspect that no sequel to his 2016 movie has been announced.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Hemsworth's Marvel contract is up, but in January he said he'd been 'throwing ideas' around with his 'Thor: Ragnarok' director about a fourth Thor film.
Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) The arrow-wielder has been missing from the marketing for 'Infinity War.' That could mean he's not long for this world, or it could mean he's being saved for a bigger role in a sequel next year.
Loki (Tom Hiddleston) Thor's brother has flipped from bad to good and back again so many times, one can't help but wonder what much is left for him to do. Plus, he has one of the infinity stones that Thanos wants, and he looked awful scared in the first trailer.
Vision (Paul Bettany) One of the infinity stones Thanos is searching for happens to be planted in Vision's forehead. That doesn't bode well for his future.
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) Of the entire cast, Downey's been doing this the longest -- since 2008's 'Iron Man.' He's also said he wants to 'hang up [his] jersey before it's embarrassing.
Captain America (Chris Evans) Of potentially leaving the franchise, Evans has said, 'You want to get off the train before they push you off,' and indicated that, as his original six-film contract is up, the two 'Avengers' films will be his last. He's the safest bet .. to not be safe.

While the Russo brothers, the directors of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, have gone on record as saying that they kept the ending of the film a secret from even members of the cast, going to the extent of handing out fake scripts, shooting decoy scenes and multiple endings to keep everyone guessing, the unlikeliest of sources has perhaps spoiled a significant plot point.
According to Express.co.uk, a new LEGO set titled Thanos: The Last Battle, reveals key descriptions of events that could be what happens in the film. The set in question includes the characters Thanos, Iron Man, Star Lord and Gamora. We’ve already seen them interact with each other in the several trailers Marvel has released for the film, particularly the orange-hued action sequence in which we’ve seen Thanos punch Iron Man to the ground as Star Lord shoots at him from a distance.
The inclusion of Gamora in this set is also revealing - she is Thanos’ estranged daughter, who, with her sister Nebula, have serious daddy issues that the film will address. Remo songs download mp3. We’ve also seen a quick glimpse of what looks like a flashback featuring a young Gamora and Thanos, and we’ve also seen another shot in which the Mad Titan holds Gamora’s tiny green hand in his.
According to the report, here are the instructions: “Shoot at Thanos from the ship’s thorns. Open the cockpit and attack the space bike along with Star Lord and Gamora. Avoid the blows of Thanos’s huge sword and use Iron Man’s power units to defeat Titan’s supervillain. Having won, grab the golden glove of infinity and fly away.”
It’s unclear if the events described here have been taken directly from the film, but if this transpires, then it would mean that Infinity War ends with Thanos losing the Infinity Gauntlet - in the film, it is the Gauntlet, and the six Infinity Stones that power it, that brings Thanos to Earth.
The report also suggests that it is because of this victory that the Avengers are able to perform time travel, as has been evidenced by the numerous set pictures from Avengers 4, in which we see the heroes travelling back to what look like scenes from previous Marvel movies. They accomplish this thanks to the Time Stone, which they now possess.
We’ll only find out if these theories turn out to be true on April 27, when the film releases. Until then, you can spend Rs 7500 on the LEGO set.
Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr, Josh Brolin, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner (?), Samuel L Jackson, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Don Cheadle, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Rudd (?) and Tom Hiddleston.
